Adventures of a Chiropractic Intern – Week 7
Power to the People
I once heard that democracy is the worst form of government until you compare it to all other forms. The great debate on how to fix our broken healthcare system is back in full swing, but is it truly broken? Or is it our highly processed, heavily medicated, sedentary, All-American lifestyle that’s broken?
There is no denying that the cost of healthcare is crippling in this country and we do need cheaper, better insurance. But don’t we also need fewer sick people. If we have less sickness, the cost of treating it becomes irrelevant. Let’s take the power back, instead of trusting our elected officials to put aside their differences and decide what is best for us all. Let’s decide for ourselves and choose better lifestyles.
Or here’s another thought. What if instead of putting all our resources toward lessening health insurance costs, we put a large portion of the resources toward making healthy food as affordable as the unhealthy processed stuff we call food or maybe reimburse people for gym memberships and exercising. By doing either of these we can begin attacking the problem of our nation being so sick at the cause instead of trying to fix what our lifestyle has already trashed, our health. We could reward farmers for growing organic, non-GMO crops and encourage grass fed, pasture raised animal or subsidize the buying of these products to encourage people to make better choices.
Did you know that by doing one thing you can effect blood pressure, heart rate, asthma, depression, brain function, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, indigestion, rage, depression and anxiety? That one thing is working on posture. Chiropractic can take the lead here and by simply working to correct bad posture we can begin to change the health profile of this country. Take a look around, there is no shortage of bad posture in today’s high-tech electronic world. It starts however with our children and grandchildren and helping them grow up healthy. Today’s generation is the first generation expected to live a shorter life than their parents. This is unacceptable.
Look at what kids are eating and how they are walking around with terrible posture because they’re staring down at some electronic device all day long. I challenge all of you reading this to make sure you have your kids and grandkids checked by a posture expert so we start growing healthier kids, not sick ones, and ultimately change the future health of our great country.
As a nation, let’s take the power back by making better choices for ourselves and families instead of trusting our government to make those decisions for us.
Power to the people!
